The municipality of Vilnius has issued the permit to organize the Baltic Pride march, however in a different location. The new route stretches along Olimpiečių and Rinktinės streets down to the car park near Vilnius Hall for Concerts and Sports that is closed down. The Department for Cultural Heritage has expressed a disapporovement, because this is where the old Jewish graveyard was and the Department does not approve any mass events in this location.
„They did not take our proposals into account and now they force us to march over a Jewish graveyard. I think it’s strange they force us doing it. Not even strange, it‘s unethical”- commented V. Simonko, one of the organizers of the Baltic Pride.
The organizers of the Baltic Pride respect the opinion of the Department and will seek to find an agreement with the Vilnius municipality on a more appropriate route.
The political party “Order and Justice” is threatening the Mayor with an interpellation because he issued the permit. At the same time the leader of the city‘s conservative party, parliamentarian M. Adomėnas publically criticizes the “completely anti-Christian position” of the Mayor even though the cardinal Audrys Juozas Bačkys sees the permit for the Baltic Pride March as a successful compromise.
